Fluoride & My Child

Q&A – Fluoride and My Child

Here at Springfield Dental Solutions, we receive a lot of questions about fluoride and whether children need fluoride. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions regarding this topic.

What is fluoride?

Fluoride is a natural mineral found in the earth’s crust.

What does fluoride do for teeth?

Fluoride helps prevent cavities. It does this in two ways. By concentrating in the growing bones and developing teeth of children, it helps to harden the enamel on baby and adult teeth before they emerge. It also helps to harden the enamel on adult teeth that have already erupted.

Is fluoride safe for my child?

Yes. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), along with the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agree that water fluoridation is a safe and effective way to help prevent tooth decay.

If my local water does not have fluoride in it? How can my child get fluoride?

The ADA and AAP recommend a “smear” of fluoride toothpaste once your child has his/her first teeth. Once your child is over the age of three, he/she can use a small amount of fluoride toothpaste on a toothbrush. Also, you can find bottled water supplemented in your local baby food aisle. When your child comes in for a dental cleaning and checkup, we will recommend a fluoride treatment during their visit.
