Halitosis: A Stinky Subject

Nobody enjoys bad breath. Whether it’s someone you love, or something you’re worried about having yourself, halitosis is a real problem for thousands of people.

Avoid Alcoholic Mouth Rinses

Alcohol can dry out your mouth, altering the natural flora levels. This can create an imbalance that changes your normal breath and creates a malodor. Use an alcohol-free rinse and drink plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated is extremely important.

Talk to Your Doctor

Some types of bad breath are the result of specific medical conditions, such as GI diseases or indigestion.

Clean Your Tongue

More than 90% of bad breath bacteria are on your tongue. A tongue scraper can remove a large portion of them with just a couple of swipes. If you’re not familiar with cleaning your tongue each time you brush and floss, ask your dentist or hygienist which tools work best.

Watch What You’re Eating

Odorous foods are specific items that are known for leading to smelly breath typically including things like garlic, eggs, milk and cheese.

Cut Tobacco

Smokeless tobacco, cigarettes and even the occasional cigar can lead to odorous particle buildup throughout your mouth. Plus, they dry out your oral tissues, which can make smells more noticeable.

Get Screened for Gum Disease

Periodontal disease has a specific odor that no amount of brushing or breath mints will mask. If you’re also experiencing symptoms of swollen or receding gums (smokers may not see any warning signs at all) be sure to get a periodontal screening at your next checkup.
